iWatch to Predict Heart Problems

There are supposedly 600,000 people who die from heart disease every year.

Heart disease is an umbrella term for any type of disorder that affects the heart. Heart disease means the same as cardiac disease but not cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease refers to disorders of the blood vessels and heart, while heart disease refers to just, well, the heart.

If you can tell if you are about to have a heart attack, you would be able to chew some aspirin to prevent it. You'd be able to call the emergency numbers and get the ambulance on the way. You'd be more likely to survive.

The good news is that Apple, which is reportedly working on a "smart" wristwatch, is working on a technology that could identify the owner's unique electrical signals from the heart.

According to Thomas Lee and David R. Baker at the San Francisco Chronicle, Apple hired a "renowned audio engineer" named Tomlinson Holman to develop software and hardware that would allow a watch on your wrist to listen to your blood flow and then alert you when "turbulence" indicated that you were about to have a heart attack.

Prior to joining Apple, Holman worked for Lucasfilm, where he led development of THX — a sound system for movie theaters.

Though Apple has never confirmed it, the company hired Holman in 2011 to "provide audio direction," according to his LinkedIn profile. At the time, observers assumed Holman would focus his efforts on boosting the audio quality of MacBooks and iPhones.

The bad news about all this is that reporting on the capabilities of Apple gadgets before they launch is often way off. It's getting better when it comes to iterative improvements on products with existing supply chains, like the iPhone and iPad, but for gadgets in new categories it remains a little doubtful.

People have been hearing about a new Apple TV for years now, for instance, and there are all kinds of whacky ideas about what the iPad would look like before it came. However, all of it did not materialize.
