Super Typhoon Haiyan
Several international weather monitoring groups have already tagged "Yolanda" (international name Haiyan) as a super typhoon. They also warned the Philippines against a trail of death and destruction when it hits the country today.

"Haiyan became a super typhoon Wednesday morning (6 November 2013)," commercial weather service Accuweather said. It called 'Haiyan' the world's "strongest tropical system" this year. The U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center also labelled it a super typhoon and warned that it may still strengthen as it crosses the country.

A bulletin by the U.S. National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service meanwhile said Yolanda "has developed to almost max intensity for a cyclone."

The super typhoon is forecasted to directly impact Visayas areas of Leyte, Cebu, Biliran, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, Romblon, Mindoro, Busuanga and Semirara Island.

It is during these times that mobile applications could serve as an important lifeline for several affected areas. Two of these applications or apps are now available for iPhone units through the App Store.

If you've ever wondered what you would do if you were in an Extreme Weather Event, such as 'Haiya', or even an Earthquake or Terror Attack these apps may be your answer:

Disaster Alert
Disaster Alert (by Pacific Disaster Center) provides a listing and an interactive map of Active Hazards occurring around the globe. Additional information and reports about hazards can be viewed and shared.

The term "Active Hazards" refers to a collection of current and real-time incidents (compiled from authoritative sources) which have been designated "potentially hazardous to people, property, or assets" by the PDC DisasterAWARE™ application.

PDC Active Hazards currently includes:
  1. Global events (Observational Sources): Hurricane/Tropical Cyclone, Drought, Earthquake, Tsunami, Volcano. Major events (News Sources): Floods, Manmade, Marine, Storms, Wildfires.
  2. Hawaii Only (Observational Sources): National Weather Service High Surf, High Wind, Flood.
The application is a free download.

Disaster Caster
This is an easy to use App that will instruct users what to do if there is an Earthquake, Extreme Weather Event, or a Terror Attack.

Disaster Caster helps put in place a Family Plan as to what should be done in the event of a disaster. It offers an organized way to communicate plans, current location and time, customize messages, and build custom contact lists.

Disaster Caster: is designed so that in the click of a few short buttons the user can either:
  • Send a pre-programmed disaster plan to selected family and friends.
  • Send forward the user's location based on the phone's GPS.
  • Have one touch access to emergency numbers and pre-programmed phone help.
  • Have multiple disaster plans stored for different disaster events.
