23rd WEF on East Asia
As one of the economically fastest-growing regions in the world, ASEAN is one year away from launching the ASEAN Economic Community, a common market which will comprise 600 million people and have a combined GDP of nearly US$ 2 trillion.

Fresh demand in Europe and the United States, along with recently concluded trade agreements, are expected to boost production and consumption in East Asia. Almost all of the 10 ASEAN economies are expecting growth above 5 percent in 2014.

In this context, the 23rd World Economic Forum on East Asia will be held in Metro Manila, Philippines from 21 to 23 May 2014 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Makati. With the theme, "Leveraging Growth for Equitable Progress," President Aquino is expected to give the keynote address. Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Myanmar’s Vice President U Nyan Tun will also lead the opening ceremonies.

The meeting will serve as an ideal platform for participants to deliberate the opportunities of the ASEAN Economic Community to promote greater inclusion across East Asia and to instil more resilient decision-making in the face of unpredictable economic and natural disruptions.

Writing one of the greatest economic comeback stories in recent years, the Philippines is poised to be the strongest performing South-East Asian economy in 2014, with GDP growth projected to surpass 6.5 percent.

"Here at the World Economic Forum, we hope to be able to open the Philippines to the world and show the past three years in terms of good governance, economic reforms and solid performance. Now is the best time to offer the Philippines as a good investment arena. It’s a good time to open our doors to World Economic Forum and APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation)," Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio Singson said.

"We want to show that infrastructure projects really make a difference in economic development like in Singapore and Malaysia. They can see how much they can invest in infrastructure and they can really be assured that the Philippines has an understanding of what they are investing in," he added.

The World Economic Forum is an international institution committed to improving the state of the world through public-private cooperation in the spirit of global citizenship. It engages with business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.

Incorporated as a not-for-profit foundation in 1971 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the Forum is independent, impartial and not tied to any interests. It cooperates closely with all leading international organizations.
