A non-scientific way of ranking the world’s worst cities for driving puts Manila on the news again.

According to CNNGo, a travel and lifestyle website, the Philippine capital is the world's third-worst city for driving. It highlights the perception of many commuters, which cite traffic congestion as their number one problem, followed by air pollution, garbage collection, flood control and the need for security.

CNNGo also utilized the IBM's 2011 Commuter Pain survey, World Bank statistics and other Internet sources to put together a list for those who want to maintain a perception that there's still any romance left in driving.

According to the survey, worse than Manila were two other Asian cities like New Delhi, India and Beijing, China which topped the list.

Mexico City, Mexico placed fourth while Johannesburg, South Africa was the fifth worst.

The exact description of traffic of Manila is quoted below from the site:
"In 2001, Manila borrowed US$60 million from the World Bank for transit-related activities. Among other things, the funds were meant to "promote the use of non-motorized transport."

A campaign asking locals to "Please stop driving," however, wasn't necessarily the best approach to traffic management.

According to one report, "Residents perceive traffic congestion as their number one problem, followed by air pollution, garbage collection, flood control and the need for security."

So, Filipinos care more about getting to work on time than they do about respiratory ailments, mounting trash heaps, drowning or being assaulted? Capitalism wins again!

Redeeming quality: You're in a country in which smooth-flowing traffic is apparently of utmost importance to residents. So, you gotta figure somebody, somewhere is working on the problem. Right?"

It's not that Filipinos care more about their work than their health. It's the fact that traffic wastes so much of our time each day.

We have too many cars, too few roads, too many people, too few city centers, and the economy obviously depends on the Filipino to keep the engine running.

It's stupid to put on a campaign and waste money to ask people to stop driving when there are no reasonable alternative means of mass transport. Pity the worker who spends 4 hours each day not necessarily in traffic but in a bus or jeepney waiting for passengers to fill up before moving on.
