New rumors are hitting the airwaves and they reveal plans by Apple to make some changes to its line of MacBook Air laptops next year. Supposedly, the line is set to undergo a significant internal redesign that will allow for a slimmer form factor across the entire range.

Both 13- and 15-inch variants seem to be confirmed, but the presence of an 11-inch model among Apple's 2016 MacBook Air offerings seems to be in doubt, according to a report from MacRumors. However, the online site notes that its source has had a "hit and miss" reputation for claims like this one in the past.

Given that the new MacBook which launched earlier this year boasts a 12-inch display, it would seem like a sensible move for Apple to drop the 11-inch model from the Air line. Similarly, expanding the range into larger screen sizes looks set to be the best method for the company to diversify the laptops that it offers to customers.

Digital Trends suggested that Apple might have plans to unveil these new MacBook Air systems at the 2016 edition of its Worldwide Developers Conference. The laptops would then be made available at retail at some point over the summer or at the beginning of fall.

This year has seen Apple focus on its tablets, with the iPad Pro being the biggest priority in the face of strong competition from Microsoft's Surface range. As such, it would follow that next year the company might look more closely at more traditional devices.

However, it's worth reiterating that these rumors should be taken with a pinch of salt, at least for the time being. Despite being broadly plausible, there's no indication yet from Apple that the Air line has much of a future in the wake of the newly relaunched MacBook.
