iPhone 6 and Plus
A few months after they were launched, many Apple users are still undecided on whether they should buy an iPhone 6 or an iPhone 6 Plus.

Luckily, Jess Bolluyt of can make that decision a little bit easier for everyone. In his report, he claims that, for most users, the iPhone 6 is a better phone than the iPhone 6 Plus. Here’s why.

The screen of the iPhone 6 Plus is bigger, but the phone is more unwieldy than the smaller iPhone 6. In addition to being 25 percent lighter than the iPhone 6 Plus, the iPhone 6 is also thinner. The iPhone 6 Plus is too wide for most users to comfortably operate with one hand, while the iPhone 6 can easily be used with a single hand. The battery of the iPhone 6 Plus is larger, but because the display is typically the largest drain on a phone’s battery capacity, the iPhone 6 Plus’s larger screen drains its battery faster than the iPhone 6.

Need some more quantitative evidence? Take a look at PassMark’s iPhone benchmarks, the performance of the iPhone 6 surpasses that of the iPhone 6 Plus by 130 points, a margin almost as large as the difference between the iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 5S. PassMark’s assessment involves 17 different tests spanning five standard test suites: CPU, Memory, Disk, 2D graphics, and 3D graphics.

The results of those tests combine to determine the overall rating of the device. The results of the CPU test is the biggest contributor to a device’s overall rating so that users can gauge the performance of the device. PassMark’s analysis of the iPhone 6 revealed that the device’s total RAM is 988MB, while the iPhone 6 Plus’s total RAM is 975.6MB. The iPhone 6’s CPU also performs better than that of the iPhone 6 Plus.

The iPhone 6 also receives better ratings on Amazon, where 77 percent of its reviews rate it at five stars. Only 72 percent of the reviews for the iPhone 6 Plus, on the other hand, rate it at five stars. Nine percent of the reviews for both phones rated them at four stars, which means that 86 percent of reviews for the iPhone 6 rated it at four stars or above while only 79 percent of reviews for the iPhone 6 Plus rated it at four stars or above.

However, interestingly enough, SpecOut, one of our favorite sources for comparing different devices, rates the iPhone 6 Plus a little more favorably than the iPhone 6 — likely because of its emphasis on a phone’s technical specifications and how they compare to those of the other smartphones on the market.

The iPhone 6 Plus gets 3.5 stars out of 5 based on 27 user reviews, while the iPhone 6 gets 3.4 stars based on 42 user reviews. Similarly, the iPhone 6 Plus earned a Smart Rating of 97, while the iPhone 6 earned a 95. SpecOut’s Smart Ratings are based 45.4 percent on a device’s technical specifications, 42.4 percent on expert ratings, 7.4 percent on the phone’s overview and features, and 4.9 percent on performance benchmarks. Out of the 3,070 smartphones on SpecOut, the iPhone 6 ranks at 541 for its technical specifications, and the iPhone 6 Plus ranks at 230.

SpecOut’s comparison of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus notes that a major plus of the iPhone 6 Plus is its supersized display.

"Between these phones, only the iPhone 6 Plus boasts a 1080p quality screen, while the iPhone 6 has a 720p screen," the comparison explains. "The display of the iPhone 6 Plus is not only 0.8 inch larger diagonally, its screen is also sharper. Its pixel density, measured in pixels per inch of screen, is 23% higher than that of the iPhone 6. Having a Retina display isn’t everything.”

However, SpecOut notes that "If portability and ease of use are important, the iPhone 6 is the right choice between these two phones."
