Carabao is not Pinoy?

Carabao

Do you know that the Philippine national animal, the hardy, plodding carabao isn't endemic to the country but descended from swamp buffaloes in China? This was revealed by a recent study conducted by scientists from the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC).

Several researchers led by Leslie Anne del Barrio took a scientific way to end the debate on whether the carabao is endemic or not by conducting a genetic analysis to discover the links between carabaos here and in China.

To measure the genetic link among the species, Del Barrio and her team resorted to the use of the D-loop mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid (mtDNA), microsatellites and protein coding loci.

The use of mtDNA is crucial to determine intra and interspecific variation by way of maternal transmission, no recombination and high substitution rate.

Through molecular analysis, parti-cularly sequencing mtDNA and comparing them with other sequences all over the country and in other countries, the team sought to know from where the extant carabao population came.

Eventually, the Del Barrio team established that the carabao, which is now a symbol of just how hardy Filipinos are, descended from the maternal line of Chinese swamp buffaloes.

Del Barrio and her colleagues got mtDNA D-loop from 36 blood and DNA samples through molecular cloning and sequence analysis and in the process found out from whence the carabaos came.

The samples were acquired from Cagayan, Batangas, Bohol and Bukidnon.

DNA was collected and the D-loop region was amplified through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers CB3 and A.dlo.H with PCR product of 484-bp. The D-loop PCR products were cloned and sequenced.

Six computer programs and databases like GenBank, BLAST programs, Vector NTI suite, Chromas 2.33, ClustalX and TreeView were utilized to examine the sequences.

All told, 97.5 percent homology was detected from the multiple sequence alignment analysis.

Based on the Blast N database, the sequences showed 99 percent to 100 percent compatibility with China breeds, confirming that local carabaos had descended from the maternal lines in China.

Not content with the result, the team developed a rooted phylogenetic tree and confirmed further that the local carabao was inextricably linked to Lineage A of swamp buffaloes and closely related to Chinese buffaloes.

Scientists from Malaysia, Australia and Japan had previously sequenced the D-loop region and cytochrome b genet and mtDNA of Philippine carabao but the results of their studies were not available.

The analyzed sequence of the Del Barrio study may still be used for sequencing the entire mtDNA genome of the local carabao.

However, the most concrete result of the study would be the design of proper breeding programs and the conservation of the different genetic lineages existing in the country.

It could also provide ample scientific basis for biotechnological approaches to develop even better breeds that can provide more milk and meat for a country that is dependent on imported dairy products.

Blogging Takes Some Time

Blogging for Money Takes Some Time

A lot of people are taking up blogging for the sole purpose of making money out of it. This is not an impossible goal as proven by many well-known bloggers here and abroad. The success of these individuals revealed that there are three (3) things that should be inherent in bloggers who want to pursue this track and these include average intelligence, willingness to work hard, and basic grasp of blogging technology.

Unfortunately, not many who intend to make money with blogging succeed. Hence, it cannot be avoided that these same people will whine and complain about trivial things. Most will probably blame the affiliate network's unreasonable requirements or the advertisers selective process, which have significantly influenced their blog's profit margins.

However, those who did not make enough money failed to recognized that the problem started when they set an unrealistic expectation on how fast their traffic and readership will come and how much money they will make in a very short time. As expected, once these expectations are not met, their disappointment crushed their desire to continue blogging.

Just like the big kahuna who are making money from blogging, one needs a large readership to be able to succeed. It is a common law in the field of blogging that the higher the traffic, the more advertisers will be attracted to pay for a chance of their product being featured.

Another reason that many bloggers fail to make money online has something to do with lack of planning. Not just a plan to do this and that without considering all the other factors, but a realistic plan that takes into account the amount of time and effort spent on campaigning for the site, on hooking up with advertisers and sponsors, writing a posts, among others.

Attracting a large blog readership and regular visitors, which influence the blog's ranking and eventually the number of advertisers and sponsors is not easy. The blogosphere is not stagnant. Everyday more and more blogs appear, which makes the world very competitive. Just having a great idea or a wonderful writing style is no longer enough to get attention or sponsorship. Blogs also need to sustain that attraction effectively.

Updating the blog as often as possible is a great way to keep it high in the blogrolls and gets priority in blog search engines like technorati. It is also a good way to update the readers. However, it should not stop there. In fact, in some cases or in some blogs, it does not matter how often it is updated if the number of readers they attract are very miniscule or at best irregular. Some blogging experts will even suggest that to gain more readers, "... try decreasing the frequency of your posting and use some of that time to draw new visitors by setting up link exchanges with other bloggers, making contacts in the blog community such as commenting on other blogs, joining network sites, participating in forums, and advertising your blog on advertising boards".

The bottomline is that, it usually takes some time before the expectation of reaping profits from blogs is met. However, commitment and indication in terms or markiting it and writing very good posts help hasten the process.

Tips Before taking Data Entry Jobs

Posted by Kirhat | Tuesday, December 21, 2010 | | 1 comments »

This posts will try to give a general background and information on what to expect when taking up a online opportunities such as data entry jobs. The reason behind this post is to try to logically complement the whole idea discussed in the other posts on this blog by giving a perspective from the point of view of one who tried this work before.

This job of entering data in the computer to meet the quota set by employers who are usually based overseas is not suited for everyone as many would tend to believe. The whole idea that anybody can do this kind of work developed after success stories were published on how much money can be gained from it vis-a-vis regular 8 to 5 jobs. Well, it is not really easy money and the amount earned still depends on the individual's approach to work, just like any other jobs.

Before anything else, an individual who is interested to do this kind of work needs to get their facts straight - online data entry jobs can be accomplished in an online and offline modes. Application can be secured using online sources, but the process on enterin data itself need not be accomplished online.

Now, when applying for this kind of job, there is a need to secure an internet conection with a valid email address. In some cases the employers might want the applicant to fill out information related to contact details such as phone numbers or permanent mailing address, which makes sense to weed out possible unscrupulous individuals.

There might also be a test to find out how good is the applicant in typing words. There is no need to be fast or an expert in typing, but the basic skills need to be there.

Once the company hired the applicant, jobs will be assigned which can be downloaded online, some times via CDs posted to the email address or can be done directly if internet connection is fast. Once the job is completed and validated, payment can be released instantly. In most cases the payment is per page of entry done which can range from US$5 or US$10 per page. It is not a difficult task to make US$50 or even hundred per day, if this is the primary focus of the person and does not have any other work.

Finding a site offering data online jobs is not difficult. Just search through Google for 'online data entry jobs' and hundreds of locations will be displayed. The problem is that it is difficult to validate all of them, hence, it is important to try to do a background search first and by visiting several forums to discuss the experience of other individuals.

To capped everything off, here are two more tips:
  • Try to hold your head up high. If the others are being paid at least US$5 for each page, then there is no reason the applicant be paid less than that. There are some who offers 50 cents per page, but it should be universal and not discriminate between a newbie and a pro since the output will most like be the same anyway.
  • If still unsure, try to finish small portions of the job at a time and ask for payment instantly. There might be companies who will try to delay payment even after you have finished delivering the whole package.

The Colorful World of the "at" Symbol

Posted by Kirhat | Wednesday, December 15, 2010 | | 2 comments »

Ray Tomlinson

Do you know that the squiggly little "at" symbol that makes our e-mail go is more colorful in translation.

It's known as an elephant's trunk in Sweden. A monkey in Serbia - and a more, ahem, delicate part of the monkey in Holland. It's a snail in Korea, a little mouse in Taiwan.

In any language, it has come a long way since it was plucked from obscurity by e-mail godfather Ray Tomlinson back in computer-heady 1971. At the time, the character was used almost exclusively by grocers and accountants.

Its use made good sense to an English speaker, shifting definitions from a rate or amount of something to a location.

"It's the only preposition on the keyboard," Tomlinson said from Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he works as he has for decades at Raytheon BBN Technologies.

But the connection was lost in other languages, and more visual references to food, animals and body parts sprang up, many based on the at’s swirling shape. The symbol is still so unfamiliar that some newspaper and Web systems cannot print it in this story.

"It's sort of like a Rorschach test. The language would sort of see in the at sign something notable from the culture. What people are familiar with is just so varied, so all these crazy things came out of it," said Karen Steffen Chung, an associate professor of linguistics, English and phonetics at National Taiwan University in Taipei.

The symbol is a strudel in Israel and a "rollmop" — for rolled pickled herring fillet — in Czech. It's "sobachka" for doggie in Russian, was dubbed an "alpha curl" in Norway and sometimes goes by "kanelbulle," a type of traditional cinnamon bun, in Swedish.

Sweden can't seem to make up its mind with the longest list of monikers, including elephant's trunk, elephant's ear, monkey’s tail, cat foot, cat's tail, and pretzel.

Chung was so intrigued that she reached out to fellow linguists around the world in (what else) e-mail for their insights.

Among the things she discovered was a variety of terms in Serbian. The word "majmun" is one. It means monkey, appears to have been borrowed from Turkish and was used in "majmunski rep" (monkey tail) and "majmunsko-a" (monkey-ish a). The Serbs also invented "ludo-a" (crazy a) for the symbol. Some countries have "official" terms for the at. The Swedish Language Board deemed it "snabel-a" (trunk-a), meaning "a" with an elephant’s trunk. Elsewhere, English prevails, including in Finland, South Africa
and India.

Tomlinson didn't have the world’s many "ats" on his mind when he developed his e-mail protocol using a nearly forgotten key on a Model 33 Teletype machine for use on ARPANET, one of the networks that became the global Internet.

It was Tomlinson who decided to append the at sign and the host name to a user's login identity. Not only did it make sense as a preposition, but it was unlikely to be confused for any other part of a user’s e-mail address, a term that had not yet surfaced.

The succinctness of the at sign, he thinks, played into the imagery in other languages.

"They certainly all tend to be taking something that's more familiar than some dry piece of commercial signage," Tomlinson said. "It's a simple symbol and it's been adopted and sort of been made into a fan icon for anything to do with computers."

The Museum of Modern Art is a fan. It "acquired" the symbol for its collection earlier this year.

At 69, the low-key Tomlinson is still working as a programmer on projects unrelated to e-mail. Have his two grown daughters made full use of bragging rights over dad’s e-mail claim to fame?

"They try to be cooler than that," Tomlinson said.

12 Mind Blogging Success Tips

Success Tips

By Ryhen Satch

When I was younger and more vigorous than I am today, I had the natural ability to ignore success tips that I got through email or other sources that I came across with. I counted three reasons: first, I was inexperienced and too young to care; second, I was too preoccupied to even try it out; and third, I was dubious and thought about it as a lot of pretentious nonsense. Maybe life was just too good for me back then and there were no cogent forces that pressured me to seek better ways to improve my life and my career.

Of course, the carefree moments didn't last. Six years ago I got my wife (girlfriend at the time) pregnant, married her, and then eventually welcomed our daughter into our lives. Things changed dramatically and I suddenly found myself financially challenged. They say that life is just like a wheel. There are times when you feel glorious at the top, but there are moments that you hit rock bottom and you're all covered with dog turd.

So that's where it all began. After realizing that I can't bring back the life that I once had, the next goal was to make this one better. That is when I started to pay attention to personal development, success tips, and the people who talked about them. The message that those successful people were sending out has become clearer and now has more meaning all because of the fact that I reached a turning point in my life and have experienced the downside of it.

All of you out there (slackers exempted) are set out to do the same thing. No matter how poor you are or how rich you are, you will always need to aim for something greater. Why? It's because that's just the way life is supposed to be. Every living thing that exists on the planet, in the mere act of living, must increase itself. It took me a long time before I became aware of this principle, but now that I am, I believe that things will be much easier to figure out at this point. I hope that all of you bloggers out there could benefit from this timeless wisdom I compiled to guide you with whatever task you set out to accomplish. Here are the 12 Mind Blogging Tips for Success:

1. Meditate

"Oh no! Ryhen's gonna go yoga and all. I can't take this crap!" Well, excuse me my Search Engine Opti-orgasmic friend. The title has the word "Mind" in there, doesn't it? It's just natural for meditation to be included here and, yes, a lot of people don't do this. How many minutes during the day do you spend reflecting, staring at empty space, thinking about nothing, thinking about yourself, or thinking about everything? A lot, I see, but the question is: do you do it effectively?

Your mind is your primary tool in everything you do. Take care of it by giving it time to recharge. The Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists, Muslims, etc., all have different techniques when meditating. You can teach them how to blog and they can teach you how to meditate.

Seriously, however, you should at least give some time for your mind while you are awake so that you'll learn how to discipline it, calm it, explore it, and maximize its potential. There are many other forms of meditation. You don't even need to shave your head and wear a robe. Here's one: find a quite place, sit down, close your eyes, and think about nothing. Sounds pretty easy, doesn't it? The hard part though is to "think about nothing." If you can do that, I'm going to call you Buddha and offer you incense.

2. Focus on the Positive

Do you wonder why so many negative things happen to you? Has it ever occurred to you that maybe the reason why those things happen is because you're always thinking about them? You always think about negative things and you worry. Why waste your time with these negative thoughts and, instead, think about more positive things. In ancient Philosophy, idealistic philosophers state that everything stems from thought. Everything that exists came from "ideas." Stop producing negativity in this world and in your own life by "not" worrying. Positive people attract more people towards them. If you want more people to come towards you, then start thinking positive. Here are some techniques that you can try:
  • Rubber Band Method – Place a rubber band on your wrist. Every time your mind starts to worry or something negative comes up in your head, snap the rubber band. Classical Conditioning (Pavlov) will associate your negative thinking with pain. Everybody hates pain, so I presume you get the idea. If you like pain, however, the internet is not a place for you.

  • Visualization – Get a piece of paper and write down your worries and negative thoughts. Now, ignite the piece of paper with a lighter or a match and watch it burn (kids, don't try this at home).

  • Opposition Thinking – Each time a negative thought enters your mind, replace it with a positive one. You have to be consistent here because this one takes some time before it turns into a habit.
3. The Notepad

Have you ever experienced suddenly having a wonderful idea inside your head then eventually forget about it throughout the day? Happens quite a lot, doesn't it? Remember, a single idea may be worth a million dollars. If your memory isn't as sharp as Einstein's, you better put that idea on to something and you better have it with you all the time. Leonardo da Vinci carried a small notepad with him where he writes down every idea that entered his mind. He could use an Iphone if he was still alive today, but that's just sad.

4. Maintain Your Objective

Your priorities could change, but your objective in life should not. What is it that you ultimately want? Do you want to be rich? Do you want to be happy? Do you want to meet extraterrestrials? Whatever it is that you want, state it and write it down. I suggest that you even frame it and hang it on your wall. This makes it easier for you to stay on track so that whatever changes that you encounter along the way, at the end of the yellow brick road, you still know what you've come for.

5. Charge Up Your Will Power

A person with a strong will shall remain imperturbable. Nobody will be able to stop you from what you want in life or what you want to accomplish if you remain steady with your goals. Motivate yourself if no one is there to motivate you. Motivate others if you can't motivate yourself. As long as you put fuel into your own engine, you'll get to your destination. Have you read about the frog who made it? Here are 3 other things that you can try to enhance your will power:
  • Let your mind be still – Don't let it wander too much. It sometimes helps to let your mind wander to squeeze out those creative juices, but if you don't control it, it will bring you along wherever it goes. Since the mind doesn't choose places to visit unless you tell it to, avoid getting into dark corners by learning how to concentrate. Writing (essay, literary, poetry, etc.) helps a lot with this because you could always exercise your mind on focusing.

  • No pain; no gain – Do you exercise? Have you ever gone through that pain period after your first day at the gym or after your first jog? Your muscles hurt like hell, right? Your will is like that. The first few stages are hard to go through, but the longer you keep at it, the easier it gets. Just keep pushing. Soon those reps will just be like eating popcorn while watching Twilight.

  • Discipline – Self improvement requires discipline. If you want to improve at anything, you have to know what discipline is all about. Someone else has a dedicated article for this so here you go: self-discipline.
6. Be Positively Significant

This guy says that there are 70 sextillion observable stars when we look at the universe with our powerful telescopes. I find the figure pretty arousing. Anyway, if you think about how high the probability is of a planet just like ours existing out there, wouldn't you say to yourself: "man, I can't be the only one who's feeling f*cked up right now!" How true could that be? You might even find a community if you Google the word "depressed." So, do you want to be like these people or do you want to be someone who's different? Problems have solutions, but you won't find one unless you act. If your mind is filled with problems, start trying to fill it up with solutions. That should keep you busy enough to keep you away from your sorrow. And if you have some time to spare, help others find solutions to their problems as well. If you can accomplish this task, then you've done something efficient.

7. Mission and Vision Statement

Our life is our business, and just like any business, we should have a mission and vision statement. Have you ever tried creating your own? Have you ever stated and written down something like: "My Mission is to be one of the top 10 highly paid bloggers in 2009 and my Vision is to create more interest in people for the understanding of human behavior."

Most business, management, and leadership books state hundreds of principles that should guide you through an organizational environment. It is, however, also true that these principles could be applied on our everyday lives. It's all about human behavior. We all deal with people anyway so why don't we incorporate those leadership, business, and management skills into our ordinary lives.

8. Read, Read, and Read

I always stress this out and I will never get tired of repeating it. Knowledge is power. Poverty and crime are always attributed to lack of education. Ignorance is bliss, but can eventually lead to failure. Illiteracy means lack of potential. Do you get my point?

Don't think that just because you got out of school means that you need not lay another hand on those books. Doctors read medical publications, Scientists read journals, Engineers read manuals, etc., etc. That makes you lucky. You don't have to read any of those boring stuff. You can read anything you want and anything you want is virtually available now compared to the time before the internet was invented. Take advantage of it. Here's a tip. Most biographies contain strategies and ideologies of great men and women. Modeling these people could tremendously increase your ability to succeed. Read about them from time to time.

9. Breathing and Relaxation

The mind is not separable from the body. Both cannot exist independent of the other. Hence, if one is week, the other gets affected. If you are sick, you won't be able to think strait. If you're insane, you won't be able to take care of yourself. The interdependency of each part of your entire being is so strong that neglecting one is detrimental to the other. OMG, what the hell am I saying?? Ok, take a deep breath, Ryhen. Pfft!

We breathe because the cells in our body need oxygen. When we are in situations that are far from typical, we tend to interrupt our normal breathing patterns. Hence, the supply of oxygen in our system gets interrupted as well. The less oxygen supply there is in our blood, the less we have in our brain. And since we use our brain to think, we need to give it a steady amount of oxygen so that it can function properly. Breathing properly helps us replenish our oxygen supply which keeps our mind sharp and active. I once saw on TV something about oxygen therapy and the benefits it could give. I'll try to do some research and maybe write something about it another time.

10. The Power of Autosuggestion

When faced with a task at work, whatever the level of complexity, how often do you say to yourself that you can finish it effectively and on time? Quite often, I suppose. Hmm… but with other things, how often do you say to yourself that you can "do it?" Probably not all the time. Do you know what the job of a coach is? Yeah, the coach gets paid to train the team, think about the strategy, unify the group, and lead them to victory. But, we are forgetting something. During training or even at the game, you'll hear the coach say "you can do it" to his team and he'll force each member to say it to themselves. Why? It's because it's not enough that he makes the team think that they can do it. The members have to be sure about themselves that they can do it.

You are your own coach. You have to believe in yourself before you expect to be successful. What you think you are won't hold you back. It is what you think 'you are not' that puts you in a state of frustration and utter disappointment. Remember that I said that everything originates from your thought. What you are now is the result of what you, in the past, have thought of becoming. If you want to become someone who is greater than who you are today, start thinking that you are already that someone. That is the power of autosuggestion.

11. Take Care of your Body

I mentioned in item 9 that the mind is not a separate entity from your body. Philosophers are still arguing about the absence of an identifiable meeting point between the non-physical mind and its physical extension (the brain). Nontheless, it doesn't take a Rene Descartes to figure out that a mentally deranged person doesn't really bother joining a fitness club.

Being physically fit also means being mentally well and vice versa. You can't expect to have a balanced state of mental awareness if you are suffering from any type of disease. And even if you don't have a disease and you just feel physically stressed, it could still add some weight on your shoulders and prevent you from reaching your goals. If you have time to go to the gym, do so. If you don't, try thinking of physical activities that you can incorporate on your daily rituals like walking your way to work or using the stairs instead of the elevator. Putting a picture of someone on a dart board is not exercise!

12. Know the Enemy

The only enemy here is "yourself." If you get discouraged, you can only blame yourself because you gave up. Always keep in mind that in all the things you do, success can be determined by the number of times you stand up every time you fall. It's always a challenge, it's the game of life, and it's a never ending obstacle. That's the whole point of succeeding. Even if you blame other people for your failure, remember that, in the end, it would still be just you. Know thyself.

Peace out!

Every second spent looking for a working apartment is precious for many trravelling entrepreneurs. Finding the right location can either give them instant opportunities or prospective ventures. In many cases, the location itself can already help facilitate access to information such as the sales agents' performance, how consumers view the products and services and how the competitors position their own products in the market for the sole purpose of outmaneuvering others.

Hence, dilapidated walls and broken fixtures that tend to annoy these entrepreneurs indirectly affects the way they perform their task and increase their sales. To prevent these type of problems from pestering their everyday operation, business people need to look up on who they are dealing with and what they are getting given their budget.

Say NO to End Violence Against Women

Posted by Kirhat | Thursday, December 02, 2010 | | 0 comments »

Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women

More than 1 million actions have been registered with the Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women initiative of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM, part of UN Women). The online effort (saynotoviolence.org) was launched one year ago to provide a platform for individuals, civil society groups and governments to showcase and record their activities on the issue. It is a direct contribution to the UN Secretary-General's campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women.

The milestone registration of actions coincides with today's International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. "I am thrilled that Say NO – UNiTE has surpassed 1 million actions," said UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet. "I signed on to Say NO as President of Chile, knowing that public commitments like this go a long way. Say NO – UNiTE is proof that there is a global groundswell for ending violence against women."

People from 227 countries and territories have visited Say NO – UNiTE. More than 300 civil society groups engage through action pages that highlight their activities and allow people who visit to sign on and express support or otherwise get involved.

Strong political commitment has come as officials from 72 governments have signed on, including 226 ministers and 31 heads of state. The European Union is moving forward with an EU-wide strategy to prevent violence, while the legislature in the Maldives adopted a new resolution on eliminating violence.

Say NO – UNiTE actions are diverse, but all add to the global momentum around stopping violence against women. In Tajikistan, Taekwondo trainers are sensitizing military men on maintaining healthy relations in their families. At a concert organized for the Global Youth Conference in Mexico last summer, 3,000 young people came together to support the UNiTE campaign and call on youth to work for peaceful communities.

The Office of the Attorney General in Thailand has embarked on a national campaign with more than 100,000 signatories, and actions that range from providing new guidance to judicial officials on upholding domestic violence laws, to parades, television shows and speech contests to spread awareness among the general public. In northern Uganda, traditional leaders called for making women’s needs central to peacebuilding and have conducted a campaign on zero tolerance for violence.

The annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence, which kicks off on 25 November, uses Say NO – UNiTE to mobilize advocates around the world to take additional actions during that time.

This year, Say NO – UNiTE has also backed a new giving drive by the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. By texting the word UNITE to 27722, people in the United States can donate $10 to the UN Foundation, which supports UN Trust Fund programmes and services on the ground. Online donations can be made through the UN Foundation.

The drive is part of a funding goal of US$ 100 million. With up to 70 percent of women and girls experiencing some form of violence, the need for vastly scaled-up support is clear. UN Trust Fund grants make possible innovative programmes to end violence, but in 2009, despite offering more than US$ 20 million in funding, the Fund could meet less than 2 percent of requests from around the world.

One organization already doing its part is Zonta International, a long-term supporter of the UN Trust Fund. It has just announced US$ 430,000 in funding to stop acid attacks against women and girls in Cambodia, Nepal and Uganda. Another US$200,000 contribution will go towards UNIFEM's work in Haiti on providing security and services for women and girls after the devastating earthquake there.
