The Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) invites micro, small , and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs) to attend "Innovating Business in Challenging Times," a forum intended to assists MSMEs respond to current economic crisis, grow their businesses, learn about 'base of the pyramid' (BOP) strategies, and network with other business and financial institutions.

For Metro Manila-based enterprises, Dr. Cecilio Pedro, president of Lamoiyan Corporation, the maker of Hapee toothpaste, will be the forum's guest of honor and keynote speaker. Lamoiyan traces its roots as a major supplier of aluminum collapsible toothpaste tubes to leading toothpaste manufacturer.

It went into crisis in 1985 when its major clients began using plastic tubes, leaving Lamoiyan without business. Two years later, Hapee toothpaste was born.

In 1990, Lamoiyan was recognized as the Most Outstanding Toothpaste Manufacturer by the Consumer's Union of the Philippines.

In the Visayas, the resource speaker will be Julia Gandion-Co, founder of Julie's Franchise Corporation, a Cebu-based enterprise. It started as a canteen concessionaire in 1970, the first Julie's Bakeshop was established in 1981 in Mandaue City.

With a solid expansion strategy, Julie's Bakeshop has become the largest bakery chain in the Philippines with more than 200 branches nationwide.

The forum is from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M. at the following venues: 30 July, Crown Regency Hotel, Arnaiz Avenue, Makati City; 19 August, Casino Español, Cebu City; and 26 August, Davao City.

A book documenting the stories of successful enterprises assisted by the PBSP Business Advisory Program will also be made available. The production of the casebook was carried out with a grant from iBoP-Asia Project, a partnership between Ateneo School of Governance and Canada's International Development Research Centre.
